Talk about yesterday: the past simple

Tell a short story about something that already happened. Learn a few useful past forms and avoid adding the past twice.

The simple idea

Start with this

For a completed past event, regular verbs often take -ed and irregular verbs change form. After did or didn’t, use the base verb.

See it in everyday English

Hindi and Gujarati lines explain the meaning; they are not word-for-word pronunciation guides.

  • I played yesterday.मैं कल खेला/खेली।હું ગઈ કાલે રમ્યો/રમી.
  • We went to the park.हम पार्क गए।અમે બગીચામાં ગયા.
  • She did not call.उसने फोन नहीं किया।તેણે ફોન ન કર્યો.

Learn a small set first

Start with play/played, visit/visited, go/went and eat/ate. Add a time such as yesterday or last week. A time phrase makes your meaning easy to follow.

Let did carry the past

Compare I went with I didn’t go and Did you go? The past form went appears in the positive statement, but did and didn’t take the base form go.

A common mistake, gently fixed

Needs a change: I didn’t ate breakfast.

Try this: I didn’t eat breakfast.

Didn’t already marks the past; use eat after it.

Say it aloud

Yesterday I visited a friend. We played a game. We did not watch television.

Optional device voice. Availability and pronunciation depend on your browser; no microphone is used.

Your turn: Say two things you did yesterday and one thing you did not do.

Try three questions

Choose one answer for each question, then check the explanations. You can change an answer and check again.

1. Yesterday we ___ to the market.
2. Did you ___ the match?
3. She didn’t ___ lunch.
See answers and explanations
  1. went — Went is the past of go.
  2. watch — Use watch after did.
  3. eat — Use eat after didn’t.
