Decimals and place value

Read, write and compare decimal numbers by understanding tenths, hundredths and thousandths.

Understand the idea

A decimal point separates whole units from parts of one. The first digit after the point is tenths, the second is hundredths and the third is thousandths. So 0.4 means 4 tenths and 0.25 means 25 hundredths. Longer does not mean larger: 0.5 equals 0.50, and 0.45 is less than 0.5 because 4 tenths is less than 5 tenths. To compare, line up the decimal points and compare digit by digit from the left. To convert a fraction with denominator 10, 100 or 1000, write the numerator with the point placed to give the right number of decimal places.

See a worked example

3.7 means 3 wholes and 7 tenths. 0.5 is greater than 0.45 because 5 tenths beats 4 tenths. 7 over 100 is written 0.07, with a zero holding the tenths place. 2.50 equals 2.5 since trailing zeros after the last decimal digit change nothing.

A useful check

Many learners think 0.45 is bigger than 0.5 because 45 is bigger than 5. Compare place by place instead: tenths first, then hundredths. A zero in the tenths place, as in 0.07, cannot be skipped.
