Understand the idea
For a constant a and a positive integer n, the derivative of ax^n is an x^(n−1). Multiply the coefficient by the exponent, then reduce the exponent by one.
See a worked example
If f(x) = 3x^4, f′(x) = 3 × 4 x^3 = 12x^3.
A useful check
The coefficient changes as well as the exponent.
