Class 3–5

Fractions of what is left

Turn a remaining quantity into a fraction of the original whole.

Understand the idea

Subtract first to find what remains. Put that number over the original total, assuming the parts are equal. Divide numerator and denominator by the same common factor to simplify.

See a worked example

A pizza has 8 equal slices. After eating 3, 5 remain, so the fraction left is 5/8.

A useful check

The denominator describes the original whole; do not replace it with the number left.

Try a fresh practice set

Five questions with feedback on every answer. New sets can repeat familiar ideas so you can practise again. This is practice, not a certified assessment.
