Adding and subtracting integers

Add and subtract positive and negative numbers confidently using the number line and sign rules.

Understand the idea

Integers include positive numbers, negative numbers and zero. On the number line, adding a positive moves right and adding a negative moves left. Subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite, so minus negative 3 becomes plus 3. For example, 5 minus negative 3 equals 8. When signs differ, subtract the smaller size from the larger size and keep the sign of the number with the larger size: negative 7 plus 4 equals negative 3. When signs match, add the sizes and keep the shared sign.

See a worked example

Start at negative 2 and add 5 to land on 3. 4 minus negative 6 equals 10 because the two minuses make a plus. Negative 8 plus 3 equals negative 5 since 8 beats 3 and the answer stays negative. A temperature of negative 3 degrees rising by 7 degrees reaches 4 degrees.

A useful check

The most common slip is treating minus negative as minus. Two minuses side by side always become plus. Another slip is ignoring which number is bigger when signs differ: negative 7 plus 4 is negative 3, not positive 3.
