Class 7–10

Solve one-variable linear equations

Undo operations while keeping an equation balanced.

Understand the idea

An equation states that two expressions are equal. Apply the same operation to both sides. Undo addition or subtraction, then multiplication or division.

See a worked example

4x + 3 = 19 → 4x = 16 → x = 4. Substitution checks it: 4 × 4 + 3 = 19.

A useful check

A moved term does not change sign by magic: show the operation performed on both sides.

Try a fresh practice set

Five questions with feedback on every answer. New sets can repeat familiar ideas so you can practise again. This is practice, not a certified assessment.
