Understand the idea
A positive integer exponent tells you how many copies of the base to multiply. It is not an instruction to multiply the base by the exponent.
See a worked example
3^4 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81.
A useful check
3^4 is 81, not 3 × 4 = 12.
