Average speed from distance and time

Calculate a whole journey’s average speed.

Understand the idea

Average speed is total distance divided by total time. Keep the units consistent. Kilometres divided by hours gives km/h.

See a worked example

A journey of 90 km in 3 h has average speed 90/3 = 30 km/h.

A useful check

A journey’s average speed is not always the simple mean of the speeds on its separate parts.

Try a fresh practice set

Five questions with feedback on every answer. New sets can repeat familiar ideas so you can practise again. This is practice, not a certified assessment.
