How to remember formulas long-term

Five techniques that turn copying into recall.

Forgetting a formula mid-exam is not a memory failure — it is a storage failure. Most students store formulas by copying them into a notebook, which feels like studying but creates almost no recall. Here is the method that actually keeps formulas available under exam pressure, and why it works.

Why formulas fade

Your brain keeps what it retrieves, not what it sees. Copying a formula is recognition — the page looks familiar. An exam needs recall — producing the formula from a blank page. Recognition can feel 100% solid and still vanish in the hall. Every technique below converts recognition into recall.

Technique 1 — derive before you memorise

Formulas you can rebuild are formulas you cannot lose. Before memorising, understand where each formula comes from:

  • Quadratic formula comes from completing the square once, slowly, by hand.
  • v = u + at and s = ut + ½at² come from the definition of acceleration and the area under a velocity–time graph.
  • Surface area formulas come from opening the solid into its net.

Derive each formula once on paper. Even if you never derive it again, the structure will hold the formula in memory like a skeleton — and if memory fails in the exam, you can rebuild it in two minutes.

Technique 2 — spaced recall, not massed copying

Copy a formula 20 times tonight and it is gone by Sunday. Recall it on a growing schedule and it stays:

  • Day 0: derive it, write it, explain it aloud.
  • Day 1: write all this chapter's formulas from memory; check; fix.
  • Day 3: same, plus mixed with the previous chapter.
  • Day 7 and Day 21: 5-minute full-sheet recall.

Each session takes minutes. The bot's spaced-repetition reminders exist exactly for this — it resurfaces your weak topics on this schedule, and the formula sheet tool gives you the master list to recall from.

Technique 3 — attach each formula to a use

A formula stored alone is fragile; a formula stored with its question is robust. For every formula, keep one solved example in your notes. When you recall “sin²θ + cos²θ = 1”, recall it as the tool that solved the “find the third side” question. In the exam, the question triggers the tool — not the other way round.

Technique 4 — make the messy ones distinctive

Some formulas are genuinely confusable. Give the troublemakers a hook:

  • Contrast pairs: write the confusing pair side by side (sin vs cos graphs; r vs R in electricity; mass vs weight) with one word on why they differ.
  • Say it strange: verbal hooks — “SOH-CAH-TOA”, “BODMAS”, “VirUses Like Colddrink” for Vitamins A, D, E, K (fat-soluble). Silly is sticky.
  • Draw it: a 5-second sketch (unit circle, right triangle, ray diagram) recovers half a formula sheet.
  • Technique 5 — test under mild pressure

Final stage: recall with a clock. Ten formulas in five minutes, or a quiz on WhatsApp where the bot picks the topics you keep missing. Pressure-proof recall is a separate skill from calm recall — train both, and the exam feels like the practice it is.

    A 15-minute daily formula routine

    1. 2 min: write yesterday's new formulas from memory.
    2. 5 min: one chapter's full formula sheet from memory, then check.
    3. 5 min: solve two numericals that use the shaky ones.
    4. 3 min: log any miss in the mistake file and reschedule it for tomorrow.

Run it daily and a full board formula sheet becomes boring — which is exactly the goal.

    FAQ

Should I memorise formulas or derivations for Class 12 Physics?

Both, but derivations are the safety net: the board regularly asks the derivation itself, and a derivation recalled correctly rebuilds every formula inside it.

What about the formula sheet in the exam hall?

Assume none exists. Boards that give element tables (like the periodic table in Chemistry) still expect formulas from memory. Prepare as if the sheet is yours alone.

Grab the chapter-wise lists on the formula sheet tool, then send quiz weak on WhatsApp to test yourself.
