How percentage and CGPA work

Percentage is simply your total marks divided by maximum marks, times 100. If you scored 444 of 500, that is 444 Γ· 500 Γ— 100 = 88.8%. It is the number most scholarship forms, admission cut-offs and college eligibility lists ask for first.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) summarises your performance on a 10-point scale. CBSE's standard convention (used in this calculator) converts it as: percentage = CGPA Γ— 9.5, so CGPA = percentage Γ· 9.5. A 9.35 CGPA corresponds to roughly 88.8%. State boards may use different grade tables β€” GSEB, for example, publishes its own grade-band table β€” so always check your board's official document when a form asks specifically for CGPA.

Divisions and what they mean

Range (typical)Division
75% and aboveDistinction
60% – 74.99%First division
45% – 59.99%Second division
33% – 44.99%Third division (33% is the usual pass line)

Band boundaries can vary by board and by year, so treat this table as the common convention β€” your mark sheet's wording always wins.

Three things students use this calculator for

  • Result day: instant conversion of a subject-wise mark statement into percentage, CGPA and division.
  • Target setting: work backwards β€” if your dream course needs 85%, the tool shows what each subject must carry. Make the weakest subject's target explicit.
  • Eligibility checks: many college and scholarship forms ask for β€œpercentage in best five” or similar variants β€” compute those by entering only the subjects counted.

Improving the number: where marks are cheapest

Before your next exam, look at your last result subject by subject. The subject with the lowest score usually has the most recoverable marks β€” a jump from 70 to 80 in your weakest subject moves the total more than 92 to 95 in your strongest. Board papers reward presentation keywords and complete steps; the CBSE prep guide covers exactly how evaluators give marks, and the bot can quiz you on any weak chapter β€” send quiz weak on WhatsApp.

FAQ

Does this calculator store my marks?

No. Everything is computed in your browser β€” nothing is sent to our servers.

How do I convert CGPA back to percentage?

Multiply by 9.5 under the CBSE convention. For 8.6 CGPA: 8.6 Γ— 9.5 = 81.7%.

What if my board gives grades like A1, B2?

Each grade maps to a grade point (A1 = 10, A2 = 9, B1 = 8 …). Average your grade points across subjects to get CGPA, then multiply by 9.5.
