The simple idea
Start with this
Many countable nouns add -s for more than one. Some add -es or change spelling, and some have an irregular plural.
See it in everyday English
Hindi and Gujarati lines explain the meaning; they are not word-for-word pronunciation guides.
- one cup → two cupsएक कप → दो कपએક કપ → બે કપ
- one box → three boxesएक डिब्बा → तीन डिब्बेએક ડબ્બો → ત્રણ ડબ્બા
- one child → two childrenएक बच्चा → दो बच्चेએક બાળક → બે બાળકો
Notice the ending
Words such as box and bus add -es: boxes, buses. A consonant plus y often changes to -ies: baby becomes babies. A vowel plus y keeps the y: toy becomes toys.
Learn unusual plurals as pairs
Keep a small list: child/children, person/people, foot/feet. Say the pair aloud with one and two. These words do not follow the usual add-s pattern.
A common mistake, gently fixed
Needs a change: two childs
Try this: two children
Child has an irregular plural: children.
Say it aloud
One box has two toys. Three children have four books.
Optional device voice. Availability and pronunciation depend on your browser; no microphone is used.
Your turn: Draw one toy and three toys. Label both pictures. Then write a sentence using children.

- boxes — Box adds -es.
- babies — Change consonant + y to -ies.
- toys — A vowel comes before y, so just add -s.
