Understand the idea
Many countable nouns add -s for more than one. Some add -es or change spelling, and some have an irregular plural. Words such as box and bus add -es: boxes, buses. A consonant plus y often changes to -ies: baby becomes babies. A vowel plus y keeps the y: toy becomes toys. Keep a small list: child/children, person/people, foot/feet. Say the pair aloud with one and two. These words do not follow the usual add-s pattern.
See a worked example
one cup → two cups / one box → three boxes / one child → two children
A useful check
